Jo’s Week Volunteering with SSF

I spent a week with SSF at their offices in London at the end of April.   I’d recently decided to take a career break and change direction and wanted to gain experience within the charity sector to better understand both my transferable skill set and identify knowledge gaps.   I chose SSF because I not only believe passionately in the positive impact they have on the 1000s of young lives they touch every year but because I’m also conscious they are a small team involved in widely diverse activity.  Perfect place to learn!

Everyone was welcoming, and they were well organised to accommodate a short-term volunteer ensuring both parties would gain the most from their time.  I felt very supported by my main point of contact and the whole team.

My week of volunteering coincided with a major SSF event and I was so impressed by the calm, professional approach as the event grew closer.  A huge project to bring to fruition it was smoothly and professionally managed and I was very impressed by the creativity and talent of not just those directly responsible but in the commitment of the whole SSF team and it was a real thrill to be even a small part of that.   Because of the event I was also able to witness not just the day to day office functions of this vibrant charity but also their event and partnership management.

I found the whole week immensely useful as well as thoroughly enjoyable.  I definitely worked hard but got so much out of it including exposure to new systems and a better understanding of some of the functional challenges of small charities and how that drives incredible innovation to overcome these.

I’d thoroughly recommend volunteering with SSF.  It is the perfect size to witness (and get involved in) professional, innovative activity across many different charity roles within a warm, supportive and fun environment.
